Thick Paint brushes let users simulate painting with thick, sticky paints, such as acrylics and oils. All Thick Paint brushes cover underlying brushstrokes. Many of the brushes can produce multicolored strokes, and others interact with underlying pixels to create realistic effects. There are two classes of Water brushes: watercolor brushes and airbrushes. Users must dry both airbrush and watercolor brushstrokes before applying effects. Watercolor brushes produce watercolor effects that react with the canvas texture. With the exception of the Wet Eraser, the width of watercolor brushstrokes is affected by stylus pressure. The pencils and the Felt Art Marker build to black and link opacity to stylus pressure. Dragging quickly with a Pencils brush produces a thinner line, while dragging slowly leaves a thicker line. Dry Media brushes range from charcoal and chalk to pastels and crayons. The opacity of Dry Media brushstrokes is linked to stylus pressure and all strokes interact with the paper texture. These brushes range from hard styles that reveal the paper grain to soft styles that glide on to completely cover existing brushstrokes. Blenders brushes affect underlying pixels by moving and mixing them. Blenders can reproduce the effects of blending paint by applying water or oil. Blenders can be used to smooth drawing lines and create shading just like a traditional pencil sketch or charcoal drawing. Effects
There are three types of Effects brushes: Artist brushes, Image Hoses, and Pattern Pens. Artist brushes let users paint in the styles of master artists, such as Vincent Van Gogh (with brushstrokes that are multishaded), or Georges Seurat (with multiple dots combining to form an image). Image Hoses are special brushes that apply images, instead of color, to the canvas. The images that these brushes "paint" with come from special image files called nozzles. Each nozzle file contains multiple images. The Variable-Size Image Hose varies the size of images as you paint. The Variable-Angle Image Hose varies the angle at which the images are applied.  Doesn't Work
I couldn't get this program to work on my laptop with windows 7. When I went to try to return the product, I couldnt contact the seller. When I logged into the Amazone site I got a message that there were no orders for me.I give up and I won't buy again.
FRUSTRATED!!!! BEWARE
I have a new laptop that has the Windows 7 operating system on it. I purchased this product because all of my research said that it is Windows 7 compatible....right??? Well, not with my computer. I've installed, uninstalled, reinstalled, and ran the compatibility troubleshooter, yet it still freezes. It does not work with Windows 7 on my laptop. I've called Corel and was left on hold for 45 minutes and still didn't talk with anyone. Their live chat was not working, and when I tried to create an account to acquire a pin number their website would not sign me on, yet they sent me an email thanking me for creating the account. What tha heck!
I was really looking forward to using this software with my photos but it's been a magnanimous frustrating disappointment. Amazon will not refund the full amount because it is software! I do not recommend this product because my experience has been HORRIBLE!
Very Nice Painting Program
As soon as I loaded this program onto my computer I opened a photo I took of a red sky sunset. Using the sharpening tool I changed a pleasant and pleasing photo into something stark and a bit frightening, something that you might find on the cover of a Stephen King horror story. Frankly I didn't expect the control the sharpening tool gives. After saving a copy of the photo, I went to the undo command in the Edit Menu and quick as a wink, my photo was back to it's old, fuzzy, pleasing self again.
The sketching tool turned the photo into sort of a wintery looking thing I didn't like very much at all, but after a bit of playing around with it I turned up something that looks like I might have drawn it. Now I'm an artist. I never would have believed it. The lighting tool works a treat as does the brightness and contrast. I can see that I'm going to be playing with a lot of my old photos. I can hardly wait.

I love this software. It is amazing and so are the tutorials that come with the program. It is so easy to use. I do digital scrap booking and this has helped take me to a new level with my pages. I am loving it.
Very Good Starter Paint Program - Highly Recommended!
We bought Corel "Painter Essentials 4" for my teenage son to see if he had any interest in digital art. We learned the program together and I was very impressed with the ease of use and power of this software. We installed this on a fairly powerful laptop running Windows Vista and have no issues with speed or stability. Here are my observations:
+ Great Tutorials; take the time to read the directions and watch the videos - greatly shortens the learning curve
+ Easy to Interface; tools are laid out intuitively and are easy to access
+ Good Tablet Support; while not needed to get full use, we have a Bamboo (Small) Pen Tablet with Pen Only, and it works great with this program
There really are not any serious negative issues with our experience and it completely exceeded my expectations, especially for the price.
