     Naccic

I like the wide-angle and the big preview screen. The of small size of this phone makes it easy to carry.

     Disappointed

I bought this to replace my Canon SD800 that was 3 years old. I really wanted the ability to shoot video in 720p. Contrary to most people, I think these small cameras are great for shooting video, especially of family and kids. Its small enough to keep in your pocket and whip it out whenever there is something video worthy. I usually use my camera to take pictures of family and kids, with occassional complex or picturesque shots, and my review is based on that experience.

    Pros:
The camera is very small. The face is about the same size as the SD800, but it is very thin. Very handy to keep in your pocket.
The video is great. Audio is not so great, as described in the "Cons" section.
    LCD is good.
There is a button to go to playback mode, instead of being on the "mode" dial. This is nice since people want to see every shot you take immediately after.

    Cons:
The picture quality is poor compared to my previous Canon point and shoots. This really surpised me since this has always been a strength of even the cheapest Canons, and even when just using their "Auto" mode. I took a couple indoor pictures of the same thing on my SD800 and then the SD940. I immediately noticed that the colors weren't quite right and the contrast seemed too high. I played around with all the manual settings there were, but could never get the pictures to look as good as on my older camera on the "Auto" mode.

In auto mode, the SD940 often seemed confused. For example, on indoor shots, it would select ISO1600 instead of using the flash. Shots were regularly blurry. Outdoor shots were better in terms of color and lighting, but quite often, they would be blurry. Pictures were usually blurry from too long an exposure as opposed to poor autofocus.

Compared to the SD800, the new camera is also more complex and cumbersome in using the manual features. I usually use the auto mode about half the time and adjust in manual mode the other half. I found the SD940 takes longer to setup due to more complex menus and just generally less user friendly navigation. And this added complexity gave very little in terms of greater flexibility in setup features.

After taking a week's worth of pictures on vacation with family, I came home and downloaded the pictures to my computer, and was generally disappointed. Most indoor pictures were incorrect in lighting - faces too dark, backgrounds washed out, images blurry from slow shutter speeds, colors seemed bland. Outdoor pictures were better, but an unacceptable number were still blurry.

In video recordings, the actual video is great. Amazing resolution, and does a good job with reproducing lights and colors. The audio quality is not so great. Some sounds picked up with too much sensitivity, and others not enough. For example, a plane went overhead on one video, and although only mildly lound in real life, the video playback made it sound like the camera was right next to the jet engine - completely deafening. Similary, voices near the camera (like mine as camera operator) played back in booming volume, while voices just 5 feet away sound like a whisper.

The camera can also get quite warm during operation. Probably influenced by the small size.

My review of this camera is based on my experience relative to the SD800. That camera had absolutely no faults. I had both cameras on my last trip and can compare pictures on my computer. The SD940, 3 years newer, seems to be a step back in most aspects other than video resolution and size.

IS works very well, but videos only in QuickTime format

I've had the camera for 3 months now. The IS works very well, both for pictures and video. My only disappointment is the video format: they are saved only in .mov (QuickTime). Compared to the more common .avi or .mp4, the .mov files are large and will not play on a Windows computer unless QuickTime is installed.

     Great Little-Big Camera

The only thing little about this camera is its outside dimensions. It takes high resolution photos and videos, it is packed with features. Has a huge viewing screen. It's so simple to use, all three of my children (7yrs to 12 yrs) and wife immediately took to it.

     Great camera, with limitations

I bought this camera for a family member, but I borrowed it for about 500 pictures on a recent trip to Nicaragua. I have an older Canon SD870 which I dearly love, but I thought I would like the smaller size of SD940 and it has HD video. The picture quality is up to normal Canon standards... no complaints there. Time-to-start-up, battery life are all excellent. But I have two complaints: (1) Even though I think I have normal size hands, the buttons (particularly the power and shutter release on the top) are just too far recessed to be accessed easily, and without looking. On the flip side, my Canon SD870 is just the opposite - it's too easy to accidentally power on the camera. And (2) Canon replaced one of the dedicated thumb wheel selectors... the shooting mode. I like to easily be able to select Continuous Mode. When you need it, you need it right away, and you don't have time to plow thru menus. For that reason alone this camera will not be replacing my SD870. If that's not important to you then you'll love this camera.
